Pictures from Port au Prince – the scale of the devastation

These pictures give some sense of the scale of the devastation which has hit Port au Prince. Not all were taken on the same day, but they do give a very real impression of how large the devastation is in the formerly crowded centre of the city

It’s also appropriate to include some statistics on the scale of the damage:

  • Latest reports are now very close to 300,000 confirmed dead
  • 300,000 seriously injured
  • Over 1,000,000 homeless
  • A diaspora of at least 500,000 into the areas outside Port au Prince, where there is no housing, no medical support and no jobs
  • So far over 70 aftershocks above 4.5 on the Richter scale

On every level Haiti has been destroyed by the earthquake, and we really need all the support we can get from the international community to resolve this
