The US embassy here has confirmed today that 4 US nationals have been kidnapped since the earthquake on 12th January. Of these one has been sexually assaulted prior to release and one of them has been shot & killed. The details have not been released.
This confirms rumours which have been around for a few days, that the kidnappings and violent crime so far made public are only the tip of the iceberg. We also have reports of an attempt by armed intruders to break into an NGO compound as well.
In addition, a senior member of the Haitian National Police was shot and killed in his car, with the motive unclear.
Needless to say we are all very aware of the situation and have taken every precaution we can to minimise the risk to our staff – both expatriate and national – and to ensure that we present as small a target as we are able to do.
We hope that our efforts will keep our staff safe.
