Waiting for the hurricane?

There is a shortage of hurricane-proof shelters here in Haiti, and the storm season is approaching fast.

So far, only about half of the 1.3 million Haitians left homeless by the Jan. 12 magnitude-7.0 earthquake have received emergency shelters, according to the latest estimates. However, many of these shelters — which include tents, tarpaulins and wood — won't be able to resist hurricanes. Some aid agencies are planning to build storm-resistant common shelters for people to take refuge, but shelter provision is running behind schedule in Haiti, despite out best efforts.

We need to do more before the storm season begins in earnest
